Dakota Ultrasonics Bolt Tension Meter and Monitors
F.A.Q.
Why use an Ultrasonic Bolt Tension Monitor instead of a calibrated torque wrench?
A calibrated torque wrench only measures rotational resistance at the nut or bolt head—not the actual clamping force inside the joint. Up to 85–90% of applied torque is lost to friction under the nut face and between the mating threads. Rust, lubrication inconsistency, thread galling, or plating variations can cause actual bolt preload to vary by ±30% or more at the exact same torque setting. An ultrasonic bolt extensometer ignores friction completely by measuring the physical acoustic stretch (elongation) of the bolt shaft to within ±0.00001 inches (0.0001 mm).
How does an Ultrasonic Bolt Tension meter calculate load and stress from sound waves?
First, the operator couples a single-element ultrasonic transducer to the flat end of an unloaded (untightened) bolt. The instrument records the baseline acoustic transit time (in nanoseconds) and initial ultrasonic length (L0). Once the bolt is tightened via torque wrench or hydraulic tensioner, two physical changes occur simultaneously: the bolt stretches in length (ΔL) and the speed of sound slows slightly inside the stressed metal zone (the acoustoelastic effect). Using the bolt's material velocity, cross-sectional geometry, and stress factor, the onboard microcomputer converts the transit-time difference directly into Elongation, Load, Stress, or % Strain.
What surface preparation is required on the bolt head or stud end?
For reliable acoustic coupling and clean back-wall reflections, both ends of the fastener (the transducer contact face and the opposite reflecting end) should be flat, parallel, and reasonably smooth (free of heavy scale, raised grade markings, or deep corrosion pits). If a bolt has raised stamped letters on the head or a rough flame-cut stud end, milling or surface-grinding a flat contact spot on the center of the bolt head and applying ultrasonic couplant gel ensures a strong, repeatable echo.
What is the difference between the Dakota BT1-DL (MiniMax), MultiMax, and BT2-DL (MAX-II)?
- Dakota BT1-DL (TI-MINIMAX): An ultra-lightweight (13.5 oz) handheld Pulse-Echo extensometer for fasteners from 1" to 48"—ideal for routine maintenance, flange bolting, and periodic shutdown inspections.
- Dakota MultiMax (Z-226-0001): Adds Echo-Echo (EE) and Echo-Echo-Verify (EEV) modes, 3 independent gates, a 1" to 999" measuring range, and a 4GB internal SD card in a portable unit for monitoring hundreds of bolts across large structures.
- Dakota BT2-DL (MAX-II): A heavy-duty bench/portable system in a sealed extruded aluminum case featuring a sunlight-readable color QVGA display, Auto-Correlation waveform matching for precise transducer placement, up to 64GB external SD storage, and Li-Ion + AA backup power.
